Vols Look to Bounce Back

The Tennessee Vols football program lost in a disappointing manner last week in double overtime to Oklahoma, after leading by 17 points early in the game. But the program is definitely improving after being dominated by Oklahoma and losing by 24 points in 2014.

This week Tennessee is a heavy favorite against Western Carolina, but most fans are already looking ahead to next week’s game against Florida. Tennessee will be looking to avenge the disappointing home loss last year.

College Football Starts Soon

It’s hard to believe the summer is almost over, but my favorite time of year is about to start. For the Tennessee Volunteers, practice starts in August, and the season kicks off  September 5 in Nashville in a game against Bowling Green.

The Vols will start the season ranked #25, one of eight SEC teams in the top 25 according to the Preseason Coaches Poll http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/073015aae.html And, Tennessee plays five teams ranked in the preseason top 25.

We will certainly take a break from our civil engineering and land surveying duties on each Saturday for three hours to watch the Vols play.

Tennessee Vols Spring football comes to a close

The spring practice season for the Tennessee Vols football team will be coming to a close this Saturday, with their annual intra-squad scrimmage, the Orange & White game.

The scrimmage is more entertainment than it is an SEC football game; the coaches don’t want to give anything up to their rivals. But, it’s a very entertaining day.

The Battle of Bristol

No, this is not a post about a Civil War conflict; it’s not even strictly about North vs. South. This is about a monumental college football game being held at a a NASCAR racetrack. Bristol Motor Speedway, the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech have announced that they will play each other at the famous racetrack in 2016 (See link below). BMS sits roughly halfway between Knoxville, TN and Blacksburg, VA, the homes of the respective SEC and ACC football powerhouses (no comments about that, please!). The relatively close proximity of the schools to BMS, the convenient I-40/I-81 corridor for travel, the 150,000+ seating capacity of BMS, and the fervent fanbases of both schools make this game likely to have the largest attendence ever at a college football game. Where do I get my tickets?

Mild mannered civil engineer or rabid college football fan?

This time of year I spend my days as a mild mannered civil engineer and land surveyor, but spend my weekends as a rabid college football fan.

If you’re a college football fan like me, then this time of the year is like Christmas. How can I complain? The Tennessee Vols are undefeated and just hired a coach that’s undefeated as their head coach, and the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers have one up on the Vols: they’ve been undefeated since 2003.

All kidding aside, I’m pretty excited to see what the Vols will do this year with a new coach, and I’ll be among the 100,000+ fans at the game in Knoxville on August 31 when UT plays Austin Peay.
